What Style should I get? . . .
There are a multitude of drapery designs with new ones all the time. But statistics
overwhelmingly show over 90% enjoy and prefer the basic draperies to the fancy poofs
and fad designs. The fancier and busier they are, the more they reported tiring
of them quickly, but costing way too much money to redecorate since they were so
expensive to begin with. For the 90% majority of customers interviewed, only a basic
drapery treatment is all that is desired.
We're here to make your decorating job easier
and save money, while enjoying your results in a more toxic free environment. You
may even become an informed consumer of home decorating in the comfort of your own
chair! This knowledge is crucial to knowing what you are getting. The main problem
with any draperies after ordering and installing is, if you hate them, you still
own them!
"When I lived in Redondo Beach in California, I used your homespun, floor to ceiling
draperies in our home. They lasted for years! When the first set of draperies for
living room, dining room, den and 2 bedrooms, eventually wore out, I ordered another
identical set. These draperies were on the south and west side of our house, in
the very hot So. Calif sun. I ordered the first set about 1962. I can't
remember when we bought the second set, but they were still there when we sold our
home in 1986. Thanks!" Pat Schultz, Guemes Island, WA
Excellent Choices. . .
There are numerous drapery treatments, but here
we will discuss the basic custom Pinch pleated or French pleated drapery, Tab draperies,
and Gathered draperies, and Homespun's exclusive Tiny-Stacking
Fan Pleat Drapery System.
Where Do I Start? . . .
If you are having difficulty deciding on the precise treatment you want for your
specific room, try visiting as many new models in your area, or drapery stores with
displays for some ideas. Take your camera or notepad to record the treatments
that strike you. Be sure to make note of the Function Ability of each treatment
as well. Many models show lovely drapery treatments, however on further investigation
offer no privacy or functionality at all.
Some drapery stores have photos of their completed works that they will show you.
Also check out booklets found in fabric stores, or photo books found in libraries,
or any leading home magazines found at either magazine stands, bookstores, or libraries,
for up-to-date ideas.
"I started using your wonderful fabrics in the fall of 1960. I used them in
my first home and in my apartments since then. I need to replace some which have
been hanging there for 35 years!" A Doty, Corvallis OR
You will find yourself your own best decorator, certainly the most interested, and
able to gather many more ideas you can use to make your home more beautiful.
Beware of the decorators that spend hours in their courses developing one or maybe
two portfolio boards selecting fabric combinations that THEY love, and proceed to
sell only those ideas to unsuspecting clients. If you know the "style"
you are most drawn to (Country, French, Victorian, etc), check out decorators that
can show you ideas in that area only. That will help you see if he/she is
on the same page you are.
Check the Details . . .
Yet another very critical item to check out with a decorator is the workroom he/she
uses. Good workrooms are extremely hard to find and it isn't cost related.
Bad is bad and can also be expensive as well. Definitely check references!
What About Fabric? . . .
Always remember if you select a print that it should be used sparingly. You
could find you get bored quickly with busy prints and have too much invested to
redecorate all over.
Instead, it is best to stick with neutrals in
your major areas, and trim with prints or add appointments, wall paper, pillows,
or crafts to add interest. These are much easier and more economical to change
as your tastes change or newer items come in. Rooms with mostly solids tend
to look restful and larger.
Textured fabrics add dimension and interest. Select a main fabric for the largest
elements in a room. Draperies, duvet cover, or a tablecloth, for example, will show
off the fabric motif.
DID YOU KNOW? Most people tend to "overclean"
their draperies. Those around smokers or construction areas would need cleaning
more. Otherwise every 3-5 years with periodic vacuuming is all most need.
Sometimes referred to as the French pleat, they are actually one
and the same. Both have permanent 3-prong folds in each pleat unit with consistent
sized spaces in between. The Pinch Pleated drapery is the standard in the industry.

In 1964 I purchased fabric from you for an old house we restored & for an historical
museum in Connecticut. Now 36 years later, I am ordering just a bit to do
curtains & drapes, just to get started. I will certainly need more in
the coming months for our new log home! Jean Dewey, Charlemont, MA

Fan Pleat . . .
Problems with too much drapery hiding your views? Try our exclusive FAN PLEAT
drapery system for WIDE-OPEN viewing. This system allows for minimal stacking of
draperies while maintaining an elegant yet casual custom look. Great for areas with
all window and no wall space to stack the drapery out of the way of your view. This
can be a ceiling or a wall installation. Enjoy the ease of washing also, since there
are no pinhooks to remove and replace when laundering.
"My dining room window which is 10 foot wide is curtained by your company.
32 years ago I was searching for a window treatment that wouldn't cover a portion
of the window when open, yet would block some of the southern sun when closed.
I gambled on your company and have been totally pleased. It's only beginning
to show some wear & has successfully been dry cleaned several times, though
gentle vacuuming usually is adequate. We live on a large cattle ranch with
no neighbors nearby and great views, so I prefer minimal window treatment.
The wide expanse of drapes virtually disappears when open. Now, I'm looking
for slipcover fabric. Thanks again!" Maxine Jones, Midland
SD
The Fan Pleat also works well for RV's and Boats, in the
tiny way it stacks up and give you that look and feel of home. Extremely durable
in the sun, and easily washable.

I want to thank you for the absolutely beautiful draperies your company made for
our home. The fabric is just wonderful and all four draperies are a perfect fit!
It is gratifying to do business with a company that not only does what it says it
will do, but does it faster than promised. Thanks so much for your quality work."
R. Fassett, Phoenix AZ

Tab Draperies
are straight panels of fabric without a stiff heading that hang from a rod.
This can be done with tabs directly around rod poles (be careful if they are wood
and you will be drawing them frequently. The tabs will wear out much sooner
than the drapery. (See Go Tab Slides under
GoTabs.)
Or the tabs are tied to rings on a pole. For
TRAVERSING Tab
Top Drapery Rods, click
HERE. If the width of the rod
requires additional supports other than center and 2 brackets, this may inhibit
the flow of the drapery as it won't be able to draw over the additional supports.
Tabbed curtains much removed from their "country" heritage! Here,
they're charmingly contemporary. A wall rod is painted to match the creamy walls;
panels also match to make the entire room restfully harmonious.

Gathered Draperies

are also straight panels of fabric without a stiff heading. Instead a casing
is sewn at the top allowing for the diameter of the rod, through which the rod is
inserted. There are a variety of rod possibilities each creating a different
visual effect that are available. Bay Windows use a gathered look. Extra
fullness is gathered onto the rod for the pleating. These are great for maintenance,
since all you do is remove, wash, iron and gather again on the rod. However, depending
on the rod selected, moving the gathered drape is difficult.

Ripplefold Draperies
|
Soft ripple-like folds flow smoothly from one end of the track to the other. The
effect is gently tailored-suitable for either commercial or residential installations.
There's no "wrong" side. Folds are identically beautiful from inside the room or
outside-an architectural advantage. Headings, suspended under the track, cannot
tip or sag, are always perfectly positioned and spaced.

Tab curtains or draperies are similar to those found in Colonial homes. They are
straight panels of fabric without stiff buckram that hang from a rod. This
can be done in a variety of fashions.
- Tabs directly around rod poles. This can be done with permanently sewn in tabs,
or ties that tie around the pole.
- Tabs tied to rings on a pole. These can be sewn on or with longer ties, are tied
on. Some with bows, some with tails hanging loose. In some cases, velcro can be
used on lighter weight draperies, or attaching the ties much closer together for
heavier fabrics.
Some things to be aware of:
- The function of the drapery. If it is opened and closed on a regular basis, tabs
directly on rods will be harder to traverse and may cause the tabs to wear out prematurely.
This can be expensive to re-do all the time. The option to this is to install or
tie the tabs on to rings, or use Go-Tabs.
- The width of the rod may require more supports. This may inhibit the flow of the
drapery as it won’t be able to go over the brackets.
Determining Rod Width:
- Measure your window GLASS width.
- Add a MINIMUM of 4 inches to each side unless you have constraints that dictate
less (i.e. a corner). Ideal is to add 10” to each side. Anything between 4 inches
and 10 inches will leave approximately that much drapery on the window when opening.
- This will be your ROD WIDTH.
Determining Fullness:
The minimum fullness for Tab Draperies is 1-1/2 times the rod width. The maximum
is approximately 2 times, unless you are using a sheer. We recommend, in most cases,
splitting the difference at 1-3/4 times fullness.
Determining Cuts:
Side hems are added here to our fullness. Side hems are a standard double 1-1/2”,
or 3” of fabric to each side.
Determining Panels:
Each panel is either a single panel or a Pair. If it is a pair, all figures will
be divided in half.
Determining Number of Tabs:
Plan for a tab at both edges, one in the middle and others evenly spaced 7”-9” apart.
Tabs are placed 7” apart on short curtains, or 9” apart on floor length draperies.
Determining Yardage Required:
Divide measurement across the top by 36 to get the number of yards needed for the
drapery. If you have more than one drapery you are doing, add all of them together
before dividing by 36.
Don’t forget to add enough yardage to make your tabs from, too. Figure 1/2 yard
per 30 tabs of WIDE fabric (over 100”), and 1/2 yard per 15 tabs for yardage 54”
and under.
